Liepaja Special Economic Zone
Liepaja Special Economic zone was established in 1997 for a 20-year period with the aim of developing trade, industry, shipping and air traffic, as well as international freight flow via Latvia. The goal of the Liepaja SEZ is to attract investments for the development of manufacturing and infrastructure, and creation of new jobs. The Liepaja SEZ covers approximately 3000 hectares, which is almost 65% of the city territory. The SEZ territory consists of: · Port (370 ha land territory, 810 ha –aquatorium). · Industrial area of the town with total area – 542.7 ha · International airport with total area – 251.1 ha, it being the second largest airport in Latvia · Former military base Karosta with total area approximately 2000 ha. During the past decade Liepaja has developed into a modern multi-functional port, attaining the fastest growth of cargo turnover in the region of the Baltic Sea. The rapid growth of the city and the port is determined by its strategically advantageous geographical situation, which allows carrying on uninterrupted and unhindered cargo flow in the port during the winter months as well. At present Liepaja is an important international transport hub, which provides for exchange of goods between Eastern and Western markets, while not so long ago in the past the only function of the port was to serve the needs of the military forces of the USSR. The location of the port of Liepaja ensures the shortest possible passage from open sea to the berths in the port and unhindered traffic under winter navigation conditions. It is the advantageous geographical location of Liepaja, which has to a great extent determined the development of Liepaja port – being the nearest port from Scandinavia and W Europe, the port of Liepaja ensures effective access to the markets of the Baltic region and CIS. |
